Be prepared to dip the boat completely ready and loaded then circle back to pick up your driver specifically on weekends.ġ. Coastal and Southern boat ramp etiquette is much different based on my experience from people the more North and inland you go. You will notice people may leave parts of the sand bar. Stick to the outside of all turns if navigating any of the creeks or follow a boat. (Towboat US and Sea Tow is a great piece of mind) Big Tidal swings-Use bigger anchor with chain. I still wear shoes to this day on any boat due to jumping on an oyster bed in Wassaw Sound.ģ. You may get rashed but never jump off boat till you verify depth or rule out oysters. Follow another boat in to access best sand bar spots. I boated with a different crowd before kids though.Ģ. Without it or on friends boats being boarded for safety checks was guaranteed to happen on the weekends while cruising. With that I was rarely boarder by DNR or USCG.

Vessel inspections-USCG Aux host free inspection almost every weekend at specific locations. Not to insult any ones intelligence or experience on Coastal water but I will share my personal lessons learned.ġ. Driving to different ramps may better for your however time on boat was always more enjoyable then fighting traffic getting to HHI even if it was 15 mile water trip for example. They do have a public boat ramp in next to that marina if interested as could cut down commute. I had my SX210 stored in Thunderbolt so based most of these trips out of there. I moved from Savannah 3 years ago but miss the area and boated those waters over 10 years. Just seeing this thread so hopefully you haven't gone but I will include my favorite spots to go. If you want to fish, Bandy's at the Hall ramp will have some good advice and bait.

If you want to go to Hilton Head, I would suggest trailering to a public ramp up there otherwise, it is couple of hours plus ride. Places to eat with the boat - Crab Shack on Tybee only during high tide, AJ's on Tybee is the best choice with a deep water dock (but they have closed boat access due to COVID - might change any day), if you dock at Bahai Blue/Morningstar marina for a small fee in Thunderbolt, you can walk to Tubby's Tank House or Tortugas Island Grill (never eaten at Tortugas).

If you boat downtown, you can see Old Fort Jackson, the Historic District, the Talmadge bridge and the port.įort Pulaski is difficult to see from the Savannah River, and Lazaretto Creek is impassable except at high tide unless you know the area or are lucky. You might be able to dock at the Westin Hotel for a fee, and then you could take the free water taxi to the city side of the river. Unfortunately, there is no where to dock the city never repaired the public docks after a few storms. Tour Downtown - it will take you about an hour to get there via the Wilmington River. There will be other boats to give you an idea where to anchor. You can walk around and explore, but remember the tides. Hang Out at a Beach - North inside of Wassaw Island and South inside of Little Tybee (both about 40 minutes from the Hall Ramp). You can get fuel, ice and snacks at Isle of Hope and Landings Harbor Marina. General warning: we have 8 foot tides and lots of shallow water (a chart plotter or App is almost a requirement - you can go from 30 feet of water to 12 to 3 in 50 yards or less with no visible warning). It is only busy during the weekends and holidays. It is located at the bridge just before you cross the ICW to reach Skidaway Island (about a mile from the park). There are a number of public ramps around the area, but your closest ramp is the Rodney J. I live on Skidaway Island I am sure you will have a great time.
